What are Negotiation Teaching Materials?

In negotiation, teaching materials need to incorporate real-life situations to be most effective.

Though there are a number of negotiation teaching materials available, at PON, we believe strongly that role-play simulations should be part of every effort to teach negotiation (at any level of instruction). In addition, negotiation games are a great addition to traditional negotiation teaching materials, such as books and videos.

Teaching materials like these were once hard to find, but the Teaching Negotiation Resource Center (TNRC) has created and curated hundreds of role-play simulations, critical case studies, periodicals, videos, and books to help train professional and non-professional negotiators.

In fact, the TNRC offers an advanced teaching materials search, that allows you to search based on nine categories, including the time required to complete the simulation or video, the concepts you want to teach, and the number of parties in the simulation. And with digitally-enhanced teaching materials, students can gauge their progress and the class can view real-time analytics and results.

Video scenarios, for example, can be a very useful way for students to visualize negotiation concepts, and can be a launch pad for group discussion, reflections, or exercises both in online classes and in-person sessions. We also believe there is an enormous amount to be learned by studying the experiences of some of the world’s greatest negotiators through in-depth case studies.

Some of the best case studies and simulations require students to face tough decisions based on imperfect information and uncertain circumstances-exactly as is the case in reality.

To learn more about negotiation teaching materials, download your FREE copy of our new special report, Teaching Negotiation: Understanding the Impact of Role-Play Simulations. This report assembles three key articles originally published in Negotiation Briefings, the newsletter of the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School.
