What is a Mediation Program?

A mediation program will provide you with core mediation skills and training and hands-on experience as a mediator in a variety of simulations.

Organizations have long recognized the value of hiring professional mediators to help resolve disputes. Using mediation skills, rather than imposing a decision, a trained mediator applies communication skills, objectivity, and creativity to help disputants reach their own voluntary solution to the conflict.

More and more, however, managers have begun to also see value in securing training through a mediation program for themselves and their employees.

In a workplace mediation program, employees themselves learn to find solutions to their shared problems. By brainstorming and collaborating, employees often strengthen their relationship during mediation and are better equipped to work together in the future.

But it takes more than just a mediation program to make a great mediator. According to a survey by Northwestern University law professor Stephen Goldberg, veteran mediators believe that establishing rapport is more important to effective mediation than employing specific mediation techniques and tactics.

To gain parties’ trust and confidence, rapport must be genuine: You can’t fake it. Some measure of trust is required before people will open up and reveal their true interests. The other result of taking a mediation program is that you can create an artful process of dispute resolution in which others do not feel maneuvered or manipulated.
