 About the Talk:

In today’s increasingly complex and remote work environments, conflict is inevitable—but it doesn’t have to be destructive. In this session, Dr. Shannon Fletcher will explore how our physiological responses to conflict, particularly the role of the vagus nerve, shape how we engage with others during moments of tension. Drawing from her research published in Negotiation and Conflict Management Research, Shannon will introduce two evidence-based skills that help individuals navigate workplace conflict more effectively.

Participants will gain practical tools to recognize and regulate their own responses to conflict, foster psychological safety, and engage in collaborative problem-solving. This session is designed for professionals seeking actionable strategies to transform conflict into an opportunity for growth and connection.

 About the Speaker:

Dr. Shannon Fletcher is a Teaching Associate in Management at the Foster School of Business at the University of Washington, where she teaches courses in organizational behavior and leadership in both undergraduate and MBA programs. Her research focuses on the behavioral foundations of thriving workplaces, with a particular emphasis on conflict resolution and interpersonal dynamics.

Her recent publication in Negotiation and Conflict Management Research, titled “Remotely Different: Two Soft Skills to Effectively Navigate Conflict in Today’s Workplace,” explores how emotional regulation and perspective-taking can transform workplace conflict into opportunities for growth. Shannon has developed an evidence-based assessment tool to help organizations better understand and improve the behaviors that influence conflict outcomes.

She has presented her work at premier academic forums including the Academy of Management and the International Association of Conflict Management. Through her teaching and consulting, Shannon equips professionals with practical tools to foster collaboration, psychological safety, and effective problem-solving in diverse organizational settings.
