About the speakers:
Irina Gordienko is a correspondent for the Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta. For the past eight years she has covered the armed conflict in all North Caucasus regions, including Dagestan and Chechnya. Her articles have focused on the federal policies in that region; the root causes and consequences of Islamist resistance; and individual stories of rebels and radicals, including an investigation of suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s six-month stay in Dagestan prior to the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013. Gordienko is completing a book about Dagestan and regularly contributes to the Russian website Caucasus Politics and the Italian website Observatorio. She will study the role of jihadist ideas in armed conflict in Dagestan and assess their potential: either dramatic radicalization and marginalization or moderation and focus on Islamic society.
Vera Mironova is a Graduate Research Fellow at the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School, and a 5th year PhD candidate in the Political Science Department at University of Maryland. Her research explores individual level behavior in conflict environments. Currently she is working on the front lines of the Ukrainian war, where using experimental and survey methodology, she is studying individual behavior and opinions of fighters and civilians.
She also conducted field work in other active conflict zones (Yemen, Palestinian Territories, DRCongo) and post-conflict regions: Balkans (Bosnia, Kosovo and Croatia), Africa (Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi), Central Asia (Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan) and Caucasus (Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan). She has published articles in Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Washington Post, The New Republic and Baltimore Sun, among others.
