About the talk:

Accurate reporting and insights from credible sources in the field are essential for key actors in any conflict to assess whether a resolution is ripe or not. The war in Ukraine is a prime example. In addition, the means by which journalists are covering conflicts globally have changed enormously since the independence of the former republics of the USSR. Paule Robitaille is a Canadian journalist who covered the collapse of the Soviet Union in the nineties and the conflicts that unfolded thereafter. This past December she returned to Ukraine, Georgia and Latvia. In this presentation, Paule will offer eyewitness accounts from her time in the field and share how both her profession and the means of reporting in conflict zones have changed.

About the speaker:

Paule Robitaille, B.C.L./L.L.B., is an independent journalist and lawyer. A Fellow at the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard (2001-2002), she lived in Moscow from 1990 to 1996. She left journalism to work as an adjudicator for the Refugee Board of Canada in 2004. She was later elected to the National Assembly of Quebec where she served from 2018 to 2022. After leaving politics, she returned to journalism and revisited, a quarter of a century later, countries dear to her heart, once republics of the former Soviet Union.
