About the Speaker:
Dr. Johnston Barkat is the Assistant Secretary-General heading the United Nations Ombudsman and Mediation Services. He serves as an independent senior advisor reporting directly to the Secretary-General and oversees offices in New York, Geneva, Vienna, Nairobi, Bangkok, Santiago, Entebbe (Uganda) and Goma (Democratic Republic of the Congo).
With over 20 years of experience in mediation and conflict resolution, Dr. Barkat is an internationally recognized expert in the field of mediation, dispute resolution and preventive diplomacy. He has previously served as a negotiations instructor and advisor on reforms to the Administration of Justice at the UN.
He has taught negotiation and mediation courses at Columbia University’s International Center for Cooperation and Conflict Resolution and is also a Distinguished Visiting Professor at Pace University where he served as Ombudsman. Additionally, he is an honorary faculty of dispute resolution for the University of Granada School of Law, in Granada Spain.
He has held leadership roles in the Association for Conflict Resolution, served as former president of the International Ombudsman Association, and is a fellow of the American Bar Foundation.
Dr. Barkat received his Ph.D from Columbia University where his research focused on strategies to create ripeness in seemingly intractable conflicts. He also holds an M.P.A. from Pace University and a B.A. in psychology from The King’s College.
