On April 11, 2014, The Program on Negotiation hosted a discussion on “South Africa’s ‘Negotiated Revolution” and Mandela’s Legacy,” moderated by Bruce Patton, co-founder of the Harvard Negotiation Project. The event featured Roelf Meyer, former Minister of Constitutional Affairs and Former Minister of Defense, South Africa, and Tim Phillips, co-founder of Beyond Conflict, formerly known as the Project on Justice in Times of Transition. During the discussions, Meyer reflected on his experience as lead negotiator for the DeKlerk government in the talks with the African National Congress that led to the end of apartheid. Both Meyer and Phillips shared their thoughts on how lessons learned from South Africa can be adapted to other countries, and how Mandela’s legacy can inspire future leaders.
