The Militancy Paradox: How Militant Extremism Makes Peace Negotiations Possible and Improbable

Event Date: Wednesday April 27, 2005
Time: 8:30 - 11:30 A.M. (Continental Breakfast at 8:00)
Location: Pound Hall 335, Harvard Law School

Speaker:
Deepak Malhotra

Peervision Case Conference: 10:15-11:30am

Harvard Business School Assistant Professor Deepak Malhotra will examine the impact of extremist (militant) groups on ethno-political negotiations and on the prospects of peace. Whereas extremist groups are typically seen as responsible for obstructing the peace process, Professor Malhotra will argue that an examination of the roots of extremism and the institutionalization of violence suggests that such groups have a more complex and paradoxical impact on peace negotiations. Professor Malhotra will present a framework with which to understand these dynamics, and with which to analyze the role of violent extremism in peace negotiations. In addition, he will present a series of propositions regarding the conditions under which peace negotiations will be likely to take place and offer a set of proposals aimed at furthering the prospects of successful negotiation in the context of protracted conflict.

Deepak Malhotra is an Assistant Professor in the Negotiations, Organizations, and Markets Unit at the Harvard Business School. He attended the University of Michigan as an undergraduate, graduating with high honors and highest distinction in Economics. Deepak completed his Ph.D. in Management and Organizations at the Kellogg School of Management in 2002. At the Kellogg School, he taught the MBA course in Negotiation, for which he received three teaching awards. At HBS, Deepak teaches Negotiation in the MBA program and in a variety of executive programs.

Following the DRF will be a Peervision case with Theodore Johnson, Program Manager and Legal Advisor at Mercy Corps Conflict Management Group. In his consulting practice, Mr. Johnson served as an advisor to the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. Justice Department, and to the Woods Hole Research Center as a policy analyst and international legal advisor. He received his JD from Western State University, and a M.A. in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School at Tufts where he is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in International Relations.
