Daniel Shapiro, Faculty, Harvard Law School and Harvard Medical School/McLean Hospital

Daniel Shapiro, Ph.D., is on the faculty at Harvard Law School and Harvard Medical School/McLean Hospital. He is the associate director of the Harvard Negotiation Project and the founder and director of the www.beyond-reason.net International Negotiation Initiative (INI). INI’s mission is to enhance international security and individual well being through theory-building and education on the emotional dimension of conflict and negotiation. INI focuses primarily on reducing identity-based conflict, especially where social, political, ethnic, or religious violence is present or imminent. Research efforts lie at the intersection of conflict management, psychology, and international law and diplomacy.

Professor Shapiro developed the “relational identity concerns” framework to shed light on the challenge of identity-based conflict. He recently published Beyond Reason: Using Emotions as You Negotiate (with co-author Roger Fisher), which expands on this framework. Shapiro has applied the framework to a variety of conflicts, from international conflict to hostage negotiations. His work has been enhanced by his extensive experience working with individuals and governments in the United States, China, Ecuador, and most of the countries in Central and Eastern Europe. He developed a conflict management program that now stretches across 30 countries and has reached more than 1 million people.

Wine and cheese will be served.
