About the talk:
Hannah Riley Bowles will explain how situational factors influence the potential for gender or other intersecting identities to influence negotiation behavior and outcomes. Her talk will focus particularly on organizational life and the boundaries of work and family. She will conclude with advice for individuals and organizations on how to reduce the disadvantageous effects of gender on negotiated outcomes.
About the speaker:
Hannah Riley Bowles is the Roy E. Larsen Senior Lecturer in Public Policy and Management at the Harvard Kennedy School (HKS). Bowles co-directs the Center for Public Leadership and Women and Public Policy Program (WAPPP) at Harvard Kennedy School. She is a leading expert on gender in negotiation. Her research focuses on women’s leadership advancement and the role of negotiation in educational and career advancement, including the management of work-family conflict. Her research appears in academic publications, such as the Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Organization Science, and Psychological Science. Her research has been featured in major news media, such as ABC News, National Public Radio, the New York Times, and Washington Post. She is the faculty director of Women and Power and Women Leading Change, Harvard Kennedy School executive programs for women in senior leadership from the public, private and non-profit sectors. She won the Harvard Kennedy School Manuel Carballo Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2003. She has been actively involved in negotiation and conflict management training, practice, and research for over 25 years, including early career opportunities to work for the governments of Argentina, Costa Rica, and Germany. She has a DBA from Harvard Business School, an MPP from Harvard Kennedy School, and a BA from Smith College.
