About the Talks:
Each year, the Program on Negotiation welcomes a group of outstanding doctoral students as PON Graduate Research Fellows. Our Fellows spend a year at PON researching and writing about current topics in the fields of negotiation and mediation, with the goal of publishing their work after their time at PON. Fellows go on to successful careers in academia, the legal and corporate worlds, as well as the public sector.
This session provides an opportunity for two of our Graduate Research Fellows to share and discuss their research findings with the negotiation community.
Nicolás Parra Herrera will present his research “Rethinking the Roots of Alternative Dispute Resolution.”
Helen Winter will present her research “Peer Mediation Among Refugee Communities: A Path to Self-efficacy and Sustainable Conflict Prevention.”
About the Speakers:
Nicolás Parra Herrera is an SJD candidate at Harvard Law School and is a graduate research fellow at the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School. He is a visiting professor of Negotiation, Mediation, Leadership, and Dispute System Design at the Universidad de los Andes in Colombia, where he received his magna cum laude degrees in law and philosophy. Herrera has published four books on legal theory and legal reasoning and a forthcoming book with PON co-founder Lawrence Susskind and Justice William Tilleman, Judicial Dispute Resolution: New Roles for Judges Ensuing Justice. He has been a visiting scholar in the Philosophy Department at Pennsylvania State University and co-hosts the first podcast on Law and Film in Latin America (El Derecho por fuera del derecho). Before Herrera’s graduate studies, he clerked at the Colombian Constitutional Court and worked at big and boutique law firms.
Helen Winter is a Graduate Research Fellow at the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School. Winter is a mediator and founder of the charitable organization R3SOLUTE based in Berlin. R3SOLUTE empowers refugees and locals to manage and prevent conflicts in their communities through dialogue work and peer mediation.
Winter holds a law degree with a focus on International Public Law from Heidelberg University, and an LL.M. with a specialization in Dispute Resolution from Pepperdine University’s Straus Institute. She is pursuing a Ph.D. at European University Viadrina in Germany.
In her own mediation practice, Winter mostly deals with intercultural disputes. Previously, Winter has worked as a mediator with the Los Angeles Superior Court and as a consultant with On Deck Mediation, where her expertise included anti-discrimination and labor law. Additionally, she has worked with the United Nations Office of the Ombudsman and Mediation Services (UNOMS), addressing systemic issues.
