About the Speakers:

Fouzia Saeed earned her PhD in Education from University of Minnesota. She is a well-known women’s rights activist, an educator and an author from Pakistan, currently residing in Washington DC. She has designed and evaluated social development and educational programs on governance, gender and youth for a wide range of organizations in USA, Afghanistan, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia and several Pacific Island nations. Her Oxford Press book on women’s issues, Taboo: The Hidden Culture of a Red Light Area, has been translated from English into Urdu, Hindi, Marathi and Japanese and is being used as a text book at several universities in the USA, UK and Pakistan. Her most recent book, Working With Sharks: A Pakistani Woman’s Story of Countering Sexual Harassment at the United Nations, was recently published in USA.

Beena Sarwar is a journalist, artist and documentary filmmaker focusing on media, gender, peace and human rights issues. She is the founding editor of The News on Sunday, and has worked as the OpEd editor of The News International and as a producer at Geo TV, Pakistan’s first 24-hour news channel. She is a Nieman Fellow (2006), a Fellow at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy (2007) and at the Ash Center for Democratic Governance (2012). Since January 2010, she has been working as Editor for Aman ki Asha (www.amankiasha.com), a peace initiative between the Jang Group of Newspapers, Pakistan and The Times of India. She blogs at Journeys to Democracy (www.beenasarwar.wordpress.com), and is on Twitter at @beenasarwar.
