In choosing to focus on healthcare, our goal for the Symposium is to enable HNLR to actively participate in dialogue on a topic that is important and relevant locally, nationally, and internationally. The Symposium will offer a unique perspective by exploring the ways in which alternative dispute resolution theory and practice could contribute to an understanding of this changing field.
The Symposium will feature four panels:
- Balancing Incentives for Innovation with Affordable Drug Practices: Understanding Interests
Examine issues around how effective negotiations can be used to arrive at pricing schemes that incentivize research and development while also satisfying consumers’ interests in having affordable access to medicine. - Mergers & Acquisitions: Unique Challenges for Healthcare Institutions
Focus on the unique negotiation, dispute resolution, and collaboration challenges that arise during mergers and acquisitions of healthcare institutions, including how these institutions manage change and maintain the highest quality of care. - Negotiating Resource Allocation in Times of Crisis: The Ebola Case Study
Focus on the domestic negotiations surrounding the Ebola epidemic as a case study for determining the allocation of scarce resources and the key logistics for the implementation of health policies. - Changing Our Nation’s Healthcare System in a Partisan Environment
Focus on the role of negotiation and alternative dispute resolution in assisting political leaders and other stakeholders in implementing the ACA and making changes to our nation’s healthcare system while navigating partisan issues.
Our Keynote Speaker will be Dr. Leonard J. Marcus, Founding Director of the Program for Health Care Negotiation and Conflict Resolution at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He is the co-author of Renegotiating Health Care: Resolving Conflict to Build Collaboration.

- Brent Henry, Vice President and General Counsel of Partners Healthcare;
- Jamie Love, Director of Knowledge Ecology International and the U.S. co-chair of the Trans-Atlantic Consumer Dialogue (TACD) Intellectual Property Policy Committee;
- Mark Wu, Assistant Professor of Law at Harvard Law School and former Director for Intellectual Property in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative;
- Timothy Westmoreland, Professor at Georgetown University Law Center and Counsel to the Subcommittee on Health and the Environment in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1979 through 1995; and
- Eric J. McNulty, Director of Research and Professional Programs of the National Preparedness Leadership Initiative at the Harvard School of Public Health.
