About the talk:

Addressing climate change is the ultimate collective action problem. We would all benefit from doing it together, but we’re generally disincentivized to do it alone. At every scale in which boundaries can be drawn between one group and another – households, neighborhoods, municipalities, regions, states, or nations – the people who want to mitigate and adapt to climate change are faced with hard questions about who to collaborate with and how. In this session Carri Hulet will share the framework she uses as a climate-focused practitioner to guide groups in answering those questions. She will also share compelling stories from some current projects, including the Resilient Mystic Collaborative, a watershed-scale effort that engages 21 municipalities adjacent to Boston Harbor (resilient.mysticriver.org); the Climigration Network, a collective to promote community-led approaches to relocation due to climate change (climigration.org); and a national dialogue to identify innovative approaches to pre- and post-disaster property buyouts. Carri will highlight some lessons she has learned from this work and some questions she actively wrestles with around the strengths and pitfalls of collaboration to make a difference on climate change.

About the speaker:

Carri Hulet is a collaboration expert and adjunct faculty with the Program on Negotiation where she co-teaches PON’s Negotiation and Dispute Resolution seminar. Hulet is Principal of her own practice, CH Consulting, acting as a strategic advisor, process designer, and facilitator with groups of people trying to manage complex challenges across various kinds of boundaries, including geographic, philosophical, disciplinary, and departmental. Most of Hulet’s practice is with groups addressing the impacts of climate change, with a particular focus on helping municipalities, agencies, non-profit, and grassroots organizations address the disproportionate impacts of climate change on vulnerable people and places.

Hulet is one of the founders of the Climigration Network (climigration.org), a group striving to center equity in the systems that support climate migration. She is also a founding organizer of the Resilient Mystic Collaborative (resilient.mysticriver.org), a 20-member municipal effort to address climate change at the watershed scale. Hulet is a co-author of the book Managing Climate Risks in Coastal Communities (Anthem, 2015).
