On March 23, 2026, the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School welcomed Malala Yousafzai, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and education activist, and Gaisu Yari, Advocacy and Policy Manager at the Malala Fund, for a special screening of Bread & Roses (2023). Directed by Sahra Mani, the documentary offers a powerful and intimate look into the lives of Afghan women following the Taliban’s return to power after the United States officially withdrew from Afghanistan in 2021.
This video features an introduction by Guhan Subramanian, Chair of the Program on Negotiation. There is a pause during which the film was screened for a live audience. The question-and-answer (Q&A) session begins with an introduction from John C. P. Goldberg, Morgan and Helen Chu Dean and Professor of Law at Harvard Law School. Following this, Malala Yousafzai and Gaisu Yari join the audience for a discussion and Q&A facilitated by Guhan Subramanian, with questions submitted by the audience.
Bread & Roses film description: Through secretly recorded footage, the film follows three women, Sharifa, Zahra, and Taranom, as they confront the sudden loss of their rights to education, work, and public life. Their stories show both the dangers of resistance and the extraordinary courage of women who continue to organize, protest, and support one another despite repression. Bread & Roses is available to stream on Apple TV at the time of posting.
