Multi-party negotiation and decision-making by consensus is instrinic to a Family Group Conference or Family Group Decision-Making process. This is where family members negotiate between professionals and extended family members on such issues as child welfare, access arrangements,elder care,health planning or educational integration for young persons with a disability etc. Striving for equal participation and consensual decision making is the norm otherwise the interests of dominant parties may prevail to the disadvantage of minors or those holding less power. Negotiations conducted through Family Group Conferences most often achieve consensual decision-making and in so doing support the well-being of minors and those vulnerable persons for whom the Conference is convened.
