Google Searches for a More Diverse Team

Recently, executives at the Silicon Valley-based internet giant Google noticed a disturbing trend: the company was having difficulty hiring and retaining female employees, from engineers to senior executives, Claire Cain Miller writes in the August 22 issue of the New York Times. Women were dropping out during the job interview process and were not being promoted at the same rate as men. In addition, women have lost ground in top leadership positions since Larry Page took over as the company’s CEO in 2011. The issue at Google reflects a larger trend, as the percentage of women working in professional computing jobs fell from 25% in 2011 to 16% in 2010. In many cases, women have been leaving large computer companies for jobs in the public sector or with start-ups.

According to a recent report from NPR Morning Edition’s Sonari Glinton, women not only negotiate harder bargains than men when it comes to vehicle purchases, but also they do more extensive preparatory work. Conventional wisdom has always placed the automobile in the realm of the masculine, but the emergence of the prepared and educated female customer has changed the way car dealers sell cars and the way car manufacturers market and design them.

Paola Cecchi Dimeglio is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at PON. She studies the effects of gender, culture and organizational behavior on international strategic alliances using quantitative and qualitative research methods. Currently, at PON, Dr. Cecchi Dimeglio is focusing on three research projects: 1) the effects of gender and culture on the decision-making, negotiation and conflict management processes in international partnerships in Asia, 2) the effects of gender on law school performance, and 3) gender and entrepreneurship.
