Riots in Paris and political murder in Amsterdam -- the news from European cities lately focuses on violent confrontation. The tensions dramatized in Paris and Amsterdam have divided some along ethnic and religious lines and reinforced perceptions that local differences are unmanageable.
Dr. Laws will examine conflict and stakeholder responses at the local level in Amsterdam. Data suggests that practical opportunities for action exist at the local level. Dr. Laws will discuss initial stages of an effort to develop a city-wide conflict management database.
David Laws is a Lecturer in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at MIT, where he received his Ph.D. His research investigates how questions of value, such as intergenerational fairness, may be approached through negotiation. He is currently in residence at the Department of Political Science at the University of Amsterdam and the Amsterdam Center for Conflict Studies.
