As we enter the 21st century, there is much evidence of major change in the way disputes are being handled. But quantitatively speaking, ADR still has not made much of an impact. Courts and the adversary system are still viewed as the norm. How can we change this culture? Professor Frank Sander will explore this question and offer his unique insight.

Frank Sander is the Bussey Professor of Law at Harvard Law School, where he joined the faculty in 1959. Since 1975 Professor Sander has been active in the subject of alternative methods of dispute resolution and is widely recognized as a pioneer and leader in the field. Until 2002 he served as Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on Dispute Resolution appointed by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court and also served as a member of the drafting committee of the Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Law's project to develop a Uniform Mediation Act.

Following Professor Sander's talk is a Peervision case conference, in which Janet Miller Wiseman, LICSW, will discuss her experience using the collaborative negotiation model for team building in an international educational organization. She will discuss a case where team members spent time in Bangladesh, the Phillipines, India and Africa helping an organization improve its internal communication while mediating contentious issues. The members of the team used the collaborative negotiation model to define interests and needs, brainstorm options and draft written agreements.
