Case Materials

The materials below were included in a casebook for students enrolled in the Coping with International Conflict course. They represent only the portion of the materials that were produced by the Harvard Negotiation Project. The casebook also included a collection of articles about each of the conflicts, which are listed in the "citations" section of each case study.

Apartheid in South Africa
Written prior to Mandela's release from prison, the case study asks students what advice they would give to various constituents involved in the Apartheid regime and its opposition.

Camp David
(1978)

Describes the U.S. hosted Camp David summit between Egyptian President Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Begin.

The Conflict between China and Vietnam
(February 1979)

Describes attempts to resolve hostilities between China and Vietnam, after a Chinese invasion in 1979.

Conflict in Central America
Includes a detailed timeline of the history leading up to the 1987 peace talks between Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.

Detention of American Personnel in Iran
(November 4, 1979 - April 18, 1980)

Describes U.S. strategies to secure the release of American hostages in Iran.

Hijacking of TWA Flight 847
(1985)
Describes the political background of hijackings in the 70's and 80s, and negotiations to free hostages in the 1985 TWA hijacking.

The Imposition of Martial Law in Poland and the U. S. Response
(December 1981 - February 1982)

Asks students to analyze the U.S. response to Poland's imposition of martial law.

The Incidents at Sea Agreement
Describes the U.S. approach to "bumping incidents" between U.S. and Soviet ships during the Cold War.

Intifada: The West Bank Uprising
Describes incidents leading up to the first Palestinian intifada, and provides a broader historical context for the conflict in the Middle East.

Jesse Jackson and the Release of Lt. Goodman
(December 1983-January 1984)

Describes Rev. Jackson's role in negotiating the release of U.S. Navy pilot Robert Goodman, who was captured during an attack on Syrian positions in Lebanon.

Negotiating the INF Treaty:
A Walk in the Woods (1982)

Describes negotiations between the U.S. and the Soviet Union to reduce intermediate range nuclear missiles.

Panama Canal Treaty Negotiations
Describes negotiations and controversy over U.S. control of the Panama Canal from 1903-1982.

The Pursuit of Victory in the Second World War (1943-1945)
Describes the endgame in WWII, encourages students to compare strategies in the Pacific and Atlantic theatre of operations.

Sadat's Trip to Jerusalem
(November 1977)

Provides background on Sadat's groundbreaking decision to travel to Jerusalem, making him the first Arab leader to officially visit Israel.

Reagan-Shultz Initiative for the Middle East
(1982-1983)

Describes Reagan's plan for peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

The Reykjavik Summit
(October 1986)

Asks students to consider the costs and benefits of a U.S.-Soviet "planning" summit to set the stage for a more extensive summit.

The SALT II Negotiations
Describes the barriers to negotiating, ratifying and implementing the SALT II treaty in the face of U.S. and Soviet disagreement about counting and verifying warheads, and deteriorating relations as a result of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

The Seizure and Recovery of the Mayaguez
(May 1975)

Describes President Ford's response to the Cambodian seizure of an American merchant ship, the SS Mayagüez, after the end of the Vietnam war.

Sir Neville Chamberlain in Munich
(September 1938)
Describes the aftermath of the World War I and events leading up to Chamberlain's negotiations with Hitler over the Sudetenland.

The Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan
Provides background on the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and asks students to consider what their advice to Gorbachev would be when he came to power in 1985.

U.S. Bombing of Libya
(April 1986)

Describes Reagan's decision to U.S. attacked Libyan military targets after a terrorist bomb exploded in a German nightclub.

U.S. Mediation of the Falkland/Malvinas Islands Dispute (April-May 1982)
Describes the U.S. role in mediating a dispute between the U.K. and Argentina over the Falkland Islands.

U.S./Mexico Natural Gas Negotiations
(1977-1979)

Describes price and quantity negotiations over U.S. imports of natural gas from Mexico.

U.S.-Soviet Relations
(1981-1985)

Asks students to consider what kind of relationship between the U.S. and Soviet Union makes sense in light of their short and long-term interests.
