    But Obama did play the role of mediator in this situation. His acknowledged biases, being a friend of Gates, and having made a comment in Gates's favor, did not preclude him acting as a mediator. Since a mediator, unlike a judge or arbitrator, does not decide the dispute for the parties, he does not need to be impartial in the same sense as a judge or arbitrator. He only needs to disclose his own biases.     By all accounts, negotiation or mediation skills seem to have been the required deserts of the best diplomats;yet to comment on President Obama's ability regarding a mediator, I would like to say that Obama's astuteness in this regard largely depends on how far he becomes instrumental in dealing/tackling with the Taliban issue.
