This insistency of one single person to beat the other at whatever cost has also manifested itself in the collapse of the most prestigious bank in Belgium, the Fortis bank. Indeed, in the negotiations to acquire the Dutch ABN-Amro bank, the hatred for the Dutch of the CEO of Fortis Belgium at the time, Mr Lippens, who had been slighted sometime before in some minor incident I imagine (this is a matter of finding the right records), pushed him to bid far over and above anything that was reasonable - which eventually resulted in the ABN-Amro collapsing, the Fortis Belgium collapsing, and banks like Santander and RBS to feel a heavy strain. One single person's ego caused no end of misery to 7 million (yes, 7 million!) people who had dealings with the Fortis, one way or another. But this will NOT be a matter of record: although the decisions were purely emotional and irrational, once it went sour, there were endless spins on the whys and hows, and the blame was never laid where it should have been... Thank you for writing such an insightful article. This last year I read Robert Cialdini’s Influence, and the book Mania’s, Panics and Crashes: your article was a great tie-in between the two books. It also helped me understand why my daughters, who are 2 years apart in age, have always demanded to be treated like unique individuals; just so long as they are given something of equivalent value as the other received, at the same time, and in the same way. I feel like I now have some insight into why, in these financially unsettled times, Americans have declared war on financial success, and individual achievement. Many have watched their financial resources and prestige evaporate, replaced with apprehension, anxiety and anger to fill the void. And with no clear understanding of how to fix the problem, all they can to now is fix the blame. Not being sure of our “place” this situation, Americans now are suffering from Status Anxiety Attacks. I hope I can find more information along this line of thought, so I can create ways to make good use of it.
