General Information

Application, Enrollment and Registration

No application will be considered unless it is complete and includes the following:

  • Complete application
  • Credit card information for full tuition payment (MasterCard or VISA only, we cannot accept debit cards), full tuition check (in U.S. dollars drawn on a U.S. bank only), or government guarantee of full tuition payment.

If you are seeking Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits, please be sure to indicate your Bar affiliation and Bar identification number(s) in the space provided on the application so that we may apply for accreditation in your state.

Although friends and family members cannot be accommodated at the classes or workshops, they are cordially invited to attend the receptions.

Approximately one month prior to the beginning of the workshop, you will receive an information packet via email.

Students from Outside of the United States

Although a large number of HNI students come from abroad, there are still special questions that non-American students need to consider before deciding to come to the Program on Negotiation.

All courses are conducted in English only. To be able to take advantage of the Program, you should have a working knowledge of English and be able to participate fluently in dialogue with the instructor and other students. We do not require certification of fluency in English, but suggest a TOEFL written exam score of 570 as a minimum proficiency standard.

You do not need any previous training in American law. The workshops are open to attorneys and non-attorneys seeking comprehensive learning in negotiation and mediation. Participants from a wide variety of professions have found these programs invaluable.

Under the United States Visa Waiver Program, visas are generally not required to attend the program if your trip is under 90 days and you have a return/onward ticket on a carrier participating in the Visa Waiver Program. It is suggested that participants check with a U.S. Consulate or Embassy in their country for more information on visa requirements. Please leave plenty of time for your visa to be processed.

Tuition includes some course materials, daily continental breakfast, lunch and snacks and several social events. Please note that accommodation, textbooks and other meals are not included.

Mediating Disputes Workshop: $4,997

Full tuition payment (in U.S. dollars with funds drawn from a U.S. bank) must accompany the enrollment application in order to secure a place in the desired workshop. We will accept faxed applications if accompanied by credit card information as tuition payment.

Reduced Tuition

Reduced tuition is available for judges, government officials, full-time teachers, full-time staff and full-time lawyers* at public interest organizations. Employees of institutions of higher education unfortunately do not qualify for reduced tuition. Applicants requesting reduced tuition are required to submit a letter of employment verification. We do not offer financial aid. The reduced rates are as follows:

Mediating Disputes Workshop: $3,750

The reduced tuition payment should accompany the application and be followed by a letter of employment verification from the applicant’s employer.

*The Harvard Negotiation Institute may, at its discretion, provide a 50% price reduction on course fees for any attorney, ABA-member or non-member, who wishes to attend an HNI workshop, but for whom the cost would be a financial hardship. Requests for tuition waivers along with an explanation of hardship must be received in writing at the time of registration via email at hni@law.harvard.edu. The Harvard Negotiation Institute offers a limited number of slots for financial hardship attendees. As registration in advance is required to attend Harvard Negotiation Institute workshops, requests for tuition waivers or reductions cannot be accepted at the door.

Registration will take place on the Monday morning of class, October 14, from 7:30 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. All participants are required to register to receive course materials and general program information.

Course Materials

Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Credit and Certificates

HNI workshops have been approved for continuing legal education (CLE) credits by every state to which we have applied. State mandatory CLE guidelines vary, and HNI students bear the responsibility of informing the HNI staff on how to report information and to what organizations. It is very important that applicants include their bar number(s) if they seek CLE credits so that we may apply for accreditation to that state. Generally, workshops have been approved for 30- 35 hours per week (maximum 70 credits possible for those attending two weeks). A formal certificate of completion will be distributed after the completion of the Program and upon receipt of full tuition payment.

Cancellation Policy

Petitions for withdrawal must be received by October 4, 2013.  These petitions must be submitted in writing and will incur a cancellation fee of $500. Those withdrawing after October 4, 2013, will not receive a refund.  Please note that we do not extend credits to future programs in the event of a withdrawal.
